VT Shipbuilding
Antony Brown: I was long term unemployed. Uh, I was a single parent, um, before that I was working in small manufacturing operations. From Jobcentre Plus I was given the opportunity to uh, join the re, uh, Learning Skills to Work programme that VT were offering. It gives me a chance of a career, I’m learning new skills all the time which I never thought at my age I could actually accomplish. The impact getting this job has given me, it’s given me a lot of confidence outside of here in my social life, I was beginning to get a little bit despondent and down and it’s, it’s given me a sense of purpose, a sense of belief in myself.
I would recommend it totally, I’d recommend it totally. Especially for people of my age group who think that they can’t learn anything, VT have given us a fantastic opportunity.
Geoff Price: Well I got involved in the programme um, because of the skill shortages that suffer in um, in the shipbuilding industry, and uh, we’ve got a partnership approach with uh, Jobcentre Plus to provide pre-employment training for locally unemployed people. Which enable us to bring in adult trainees that then progress on to tradesman status. Therefore, that uh, will actually help us with the skill shortages that uh, we’ve been encountering over the past, uh, eighteen, eighteen months.
Obviously it uh, it gives us the opportunity to bring local people in to the company, and uh, obviously that then progresses on to making us a company that uh, feels valued in the area, as well as offering locally unemployed people the opportunity to come and work for VT Shipbuilding.
